Popular Kitchen Trends of 2023 (So Far)

This past May we gave you our Popular Bathroom Trends of 2023 (So Far), so we must follow it up with the hottest kitchen remodeling trends we’ve seen thus far in 2023! Now, sit back, relax, and read on!

Earlier this year we compiled a list of 7 Kitchen Design Trends for 2023 that we expected we’d see within the several remodeling projects we had lined up. We’re happy to say, we are right on track. Now, let’s revisit, shall we?

1. Creative Cabinetry

Remodeling trends for 2023 are indeed all about innovative storage solutions that make the most of compact spaces. We mentioned leveraging your cabinets for more storage by implementing things like:

  • Deep drawers

  • Trash and recycling pull-outs

  • Built-in utensil caddies

  • A stand mixer lift or pull-out

  • Baking sheet, cutting board, and platter storage

  • A large Lazy Susan or blind corner pullout

  • Pull out shelves

  • Charging drawer/tech command center

  • Spice-holder

  • Knife holder

  • Microwave cabinet

  • Under-cabinet lighting

While a focus on storage still holds true, we have seen some other trends worth mentioning. Warm white plus earthy toned colored cabinets have become a large focus in today’s kitchen remodel. It seems the days of pure white cabinetry have drastically changed. We see folks opting for two-toned or warm white or taupe cabinetry. We’ve also seen a jump back to natural wood cabinets with a pop of color wrapped around a kitchen island. Or vice versa, colored lowers and uppers and natural wood wrapped islands. We’re getting creative, and our clients seem to dig it!

2. Dedicated Coffee Station

This just simply didn’t go out of style. There is little convincing on our part when it comes to a client adding a gorgeous dedicated coffee station within their new kitchen design. It’s a no-brainer. Coffee rejuvenates, relaxes, motivates, and tastes, “oh so good.” A designated beverage area is also a great way to free up food prep areas, but nothing beats the feeling of having your own coffee shop in your kitchen.

Even the owners of Maverick Home Remodeling, Inc. opted to include a dual coffee / libation bar within their own new kitchen design. So, it might be time to make your relationship official with an in-house coffee bar. Convinced? Good!

3. Reimagined Islands

The art of balancing comfort and style is everything in a family home. That’s why many homeowners are opting for larger kitchen islands to accommodate dining and entertaining directly in the kitchen rather than the formal dining room. This means larger kitchen islands will be integrated into remodels to accommodate larger gatherings.

This has not changed, in fact, we see kitchen islands getting bigger! If you have the space, we recommend an island. The kitchen is, and has always been, an incredible place to gather. We even wrote an entire blog about the kitchen being the heart of the house. It’s worth a read.

Take a look at before & after photos in our Project Gallery for design inspiration. You won’t be disappointed, but you may be inspired!

4. Warm Colors

Yes. Yes, yes yes, this is absolutely true. As mentioned in the ‘Creative Cabinetry’ section above, this is absolutely the trend we are seeing.

While white cabinets are still incorporated in many designs, we are seeing an increase in the use of more color options. We expected to see a bit more color this year, and boy were we right! Trends show homeowners embracing warmer tones and bold pops of color rather than monochromatic, Scandinavian-style minimalism or white and gray farmhouse-style kitchens.

Areas like your backsplash, coffee station, island, or cabinets are perfect for adding creative color combinations without committing to repainting the entire room. In fact, we’re also seeing the use of other materials like faux wood feature walls, shiplap, rustic elements, textured wallpaper, unique designs in backsplash and more. 2023 is the year of making an art inspired kitchen. Color is definitely important.

5. Let There Be Light

Lots and Lots of light! Loads of light. A plethora of light! Lighting trends have been a huge focus this year. While all kitchens need light for practical use, lighting design (both natural and artificial) is one way to let your personality really shine through. And the lighting design we’ve seen throughout 2023, has proven to be quite epic!

Earlier we recommended kitchen lighting trends for your consideration:

  • Recessed lighting

  • Under-cabinet lighting

  • Interior cabinet lighting, especially for glass cabinet doors

  • Over-scaled chandeliers and statement pendants

  • Layered lighting – multiple options that provide a variety of moods for the same room.

  • Special table lamps – including portable LED lamps, like this one from Wayfair.

This is all still true. LED lighting is something we have seen more of in 2023 and we have loved the opportunity to utilize lighting design throughout a clients kitchen, tailoring their lighting to their ‘kitchen’ needs.

6. Get Smart

Every aspect of our lives is being impacted and made easier in some way by new smart technologies and advances, and your kitchen shouldn’t be left behind. And let us tell you, it hasn’t been left behind!

Smart kitchens aren’t just convenient, but they help to save time and energy. 2023 kitchen remodels have included some of the following wifi-controlled appliances and systems:

  • Voice-activated appliances

  • Smart touchless faucets

  • Smart touchless lights

  • Speaker system throughout kitchen/dining for music and entertainment

  • Charging stations

  • Hidden screens

  • And more!

Nothing beats asking Google or Alexa for help in measurement calculations when baking! Go ahead, say thank you for your favorite virtual baking assistant! Speaking of baking, did you know we also wrote a blog on creating the perfect bakers kitchen? Technically it was also about National Banana Bread Day, but we think every day should celebrate banana bread, so why not share it today? Take a look here!

7. Best Appliances

New appliances come out often, and we love to see them all! This year, we predicted we’d see some pretty great appliances being folded into kitchen designs that were based on functionality, design, and convenience. Do you think we got it? Yes, yes we did.

  • KitchenAid Stand Mixer – this classic is never going out of style.

  • Digital air fryer for healthier fried options

  • Smart toaster oven

  • Food-processor

  • Pressure cooker

  • Electric kettle

  • Personal blenders - like the Magic Bullet

  • Espresso machine – a stunning centerpiece for your new coffee station!

  • Sous vide precision cooker

  • Small wine fridge
